What is professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity insurance protects you if you make a mistake in a piece of work for a client – for example, providing incorrect designs, poor advice or simply a sub-standard service. Many clients will require you to have professional indemnity insurance in place before starting a contract.

To give an example of a situation in which a client may claim against you, let’s assume that a project overruns due to a mistake you made during the planning stages. The client incurs unexpected costs as a result of the delay, and takes legal action against you to recover their losses. Professional indemnity insurance will cover your legal costs, as well as any compensation due to your client.

It’s important to remember that even if your client’s allegation is completely unfounded, you’ll still need to appoint a solicitor to fight the claim – and professional indemnity insurance covers this.

What is public liability insurance?

Public liability insurance protects you against allegation of injuring someone at work or causing damage to third party property. It protects against many of the common ‘slip, trips and falls’ claims and many clients will require you to have public liability cover in place.

What is employers’ liability insurance?

Employers’ liability insurance protects you against allegations of injury or illness to employees. Every company that has employees must hold a minimum of £5m employers’ liability insurance cover. Just like professional indemnity insurance and public liability insurance, you may find that clients require you to have this cover in place before you can start work for them.
